The productivity of ethanol was 23-28 g 1-1 h-1. Rogers et al. [103] used microchannel filter to retain Zymomonas mobilis for rapid ethanol production. The ethanol productivity increased to 120 g 1- 1 h - 1. Nishizawa et al. [104] carried out ethanol production using dry baker's yeast in the reactor equipped with a cross-flow filter (hollow fiber module). The ethanol productivity was 27 g 1-1 h - 1. A microporous hollow fiber module was used to separate yeast cells to keep the cell concentration high and recycle the ceils to the reactor [105, 106].

In 1969, Butterworth et al. [3] carried out starch hydrolysis using ~-amylase in a stirred ultraflltration cell. It was observed that the flux declined with time due to concentration polarization. Enzyme activity also decreased, possibly due to enzyme leakage. The problem of the ultrafiltration cell depicted in Fig. 2a is the application of dead-end filtration.
