While ultimate ownership lay with the family group, ownership in effect was widely dispersed, and there was a large body of small gentry. All this was transformed by the advance of the English centralised state which, both by negotiated settlements with Gaelic lords and, still more, by direct conquest and confiscation, replaced a Gaelic with an English landsystem throughout Ireland. A relatively simple structure emerged in which a high proportion of all the land was owned by a small number of great landowners, and occupied by a large mass of tenants, mostly of small holdings but comprising a wide range of social and economic conditions.
